San Diego Zoo’s Newest Panda Cub Named Xiao Liwu, which means ‘little gift’ in English.
The San Diego Zoo has unveiled the name of the sixth giant panda born at the Zoo — Xiao Liwu, or “Little Gift.”
The male panda cub xiao liwu was born on July 29, 2012 at the San Diego Zoo
The male cub, born July 29, was named 100 days after its birth
according to Chinese zoo tradition. Officials said the cub weighs 9.2
pounds and stretches more than 23 inches long from nose to tail.
In the Chinese tradition of naming pandas, the cub Xiao Liwu was named 100 days after his birth.
Xiao Liwu (Chinese: 小礼物), which means ‘little gift’ in English, was
chosen from 7,000 suggested names. Nearly 35,000 votes were cast to
decide on one of six suggested names from Zoo officials for the panda:
Qi Ji (Miracle), Yu Di (Raindrop), Da Hai (Big Ocean or Big Sea), Xiao
Liwu (Little Gift), Yong Er (Brave Son) or Shui Long (Water Dragon).
Xiao Liwu is the sixth cub born to 21-year-old Bai Yun, the oldest known giant panda to give birth
Xiao Liwu’s mother is Bai Yun which means White Cloud and father Gao
Gao, which means Tall Tall. The cub is Bai Yun’s sixth. She turned 21 in
July, making her the oldest giant panda known to give birth. Four of
those offspring were moved to China to join the country’s giant panda
conservation and breeding program, while her son Yun Zi (Son of Cloud)
remains at the zoo.

San Diego Zoo is now the facility with the most giant panda cubs born
outside of China. There are only an estimated 1,600 giant pandas left
in the wild and a captive breeding program is considered an important
way to conserve the critically endangered species.

11月13日，美国圣迭亚哥动物园诞生的第六只熊猫命名仪式举行，今年7月29日出生的一只熊猫被命名为“小礼物”。名字是在社会各界热心人士推荐的7000多个名字中脱颖而出的，取“带给世界的珍贵礼物”之意。
这只熊猫幼崽出生于7月29日，根据中国动物园传统，圣地亚哥动物园在它出生100天后给它命名。动物园负责人表示，这只幼崽重约8.3斤，鼻子到尾巴之间的距离长约7米。
圣地亚哥动物园为熊猫幼崽向游客们征集了7000多个名字，其中“小礼物”得分最高。“小礼物”的妈妈是白云、爸爸是“高高”。根据中国国家林业局
